Are you ready for the new school year? Read alouds are a great way to ease some back to school jitters. Here is a list of my favorite back to school books for the first day of school and beyond, plus fun activities too!
This is the perfect book for not only the first day of kindergarten but any grade! You can help calm those first day jitters with this sweet letter from a teacher to her students. Many of your young learners are nervous and need to know that you care about them and want them to feel comfortable in their new classroom with a new teacher and possibly new friends.

Students will be able to share something about themselves with you.
You can snag the free file to go along with this book at the end of the blog post.
I love this book for the beginning of the year. We use this book for one of our first reading workshop lessons!

Y’all I love wordless books! I Walk with Vanessa is a sweet book about a young girl and her first day with new classmates. Sadly, Vanessa’s first day doesn’t go so well but another little girl notices. The next day, the little girl decides to walk with Vanessa to school and introduce her to friends. This is a great book to talk about feelings and empathy for others. Overall, an adorable book!
There is also a video of this book with music on YouTube. Here is the video for you.

If you decide to use this book to talk about feelings, here is a free cut and glue activity! You can download this free file at the end of the blog post.

A fun book to surely make your young students laugh.
I’ve used these activities in a listening center but you could also use the printables as a whole-group response to the story.
