Kindergarten Lesson Plans Week 7 featuring ideas for The Art Lesson by Tomie dePaola.
The Art Lesson Close-Read
I’ve always had a soft spot for Tomie dePaola books and The Art Lesson is a great little autobiography to share with your class.
Here are the retelling cards we use. We have found that students can start practicing retelling with text details very early in the year. This takes the act of listening to a story from a passive activity to an interactive activity (pssst… students love this!
The Engaging Reader lessons we do for the week with this book are:
- Retelling with Text Details
- Making Connections
- Opinion Writing
Naturally, an art lesson MUST be part of reading The Art Lesson! Ha! This is a little directed drawing and watercolor activity.

Science, Math, and More
Because Tomie loved his crayons so much, we decided to have a little science experiment with crayons.

Turning your weekly poem into a listening center
You know how much I love poetry!
One activity students really love is listening to poems again and again. If they can sing it, they soon will be able to read it!
So I created a songbook that has all of the poems for the entire year. THEN I added a QR code.
This is a picture from a December poem, but it shows how it works. The student simply scans the code and reads (sings) along!

You may download these lesson plans. I have used Hello Literacy Fonts (which are free for non-commercial use). You may want to download her fonts and install them on your computer first. This way the formatting will not be off. Naturally, you can change the fonts if you prefer. Download these plans by clicking HERE or on the image below.
