St Patrick’s Day Lesson Plans for Kindergarten. We love the book, Jaime O’Rourke and the Big Potato by Tomie DePaola!
St Patrick’s Day Reading Comprehension/Close Reading
We spent the week working on this fun book by Tomie DePaola. It is a perfect book to get us in the mood for St Patrick’s Day!
In addition to using this book as our close reading text, look how fantastic the illustrations work for writers workshop! Students can notice the character’s expressions!
Clearly, we can see how annoyed Mr. O’Rourke is and how Mr. O’Rourke seems to care little about her anger! As writers, we can borrow this technique in our own writing!
Here are few more gems from the book.
Retelling the Text
Then the students create their own retelling strip.
Here are some precious opinion writing pieces that were sent to us by a teacher. (Insert heart eyes)
Sometimes, with a close read, it is nice to have a video to watch towards the end of the week. This provides another example and model of fluent reading.
St Patrick’s Day Science, Math and More Lessons
In our Science, Math, and More lessons we explore potatoes. Students spend several weeks recording their findings.
We also have a few fun Jaime O’Roarke themed centers! We have two levels of each activity so you can offer differentiation.
