Kindergarten poetry is a fun and easy. Here are a few ideas!
Poetry Read Aloud
I want to share 6 poetry books that are perfect for primary learners. I am going to start with my three favorites. I have had these books for over 15 years and if you look at the books, you can tell that they were well loved.
Note: Affiliate links are included in this post.
Here are just a few of my class favorites. We have lingered on Street Tree for a long time. Personification! Metaphoric language! Yes!
We also love Leaving Woods’ Lake, Colorado. We talk about what this poem really means. When students realize it means taking the memories with them after their vacation is over, they quickly make connections with their own lives.
These illustrations by Kate Kiesler are spectacular!
Don’t you just love a Garden Hose that has dreams?!
This is another classroom favorite.
We love looking at these wonderfully small creatures. Each poem is written as a haiku! BONUS: Informational text is also included!
As evident by the cover, this book was also LOVED by my kindergartners. The rhythm and rhyme of these poems make this a fun book to read and listen to.
This book is great for acrostic poems!
Each unit has the resources to make an interactive pocket chart.
They also include a full page poem. These work well on an interactive whiteboard or as a resource to put into your class poetry book. I am happy to report that I have completed the 2nd Edition of my Poetry Stations and Shared Reading unit. This a poem from the May unit.
There is also a student copy that goes into their poetry notebook.
And let’s not forget an emergent reader to go with the poem.
There are also word work activities for each poem. You can see more on this by grabbing the FREE poetry guide at the end of this post.
Poetry Interactive Notebooks
If you prefer interactive notebooks, I have created those as well.
Poetry Music and Videos
In our Poetry Music and Video Bundle, we have added QR codes. This turns the poems into a listening station. Students can listen and follow along!
I added the QR code to the poetry notebook version of the Music set so students can take their notebook home and ALWAYS have access to the video. This would be a great homework assignment for those of you who are looking for an age appropriate task.
Q: What is the difference between the two different bundles?
A: First of all, they are different poems. I was asked to make an additional set so BOTH kindergarten and first grade could use my poetry units. Set one was made with kindergarten in mind, so the word work is right in their lane. Set two was made with kindergarten AND first grade in mind. So I doubled the word work activities. In this way, you can differentiate your classroom activities if you wish!
Q: How do I access the music and video files?
A: After you have made your purchase, you will download the file. This will include a video jukebox which is linked to the files on Vimeo. You can stream the videos. You can also download the videos if you wish. A link is provided for you.
I have been asked what is specifically included in these files. This will give you a GREAT preview!
