I want to share 6 poetry books that are perfect for primary learners. I am going to start with my three favorites.  I have had these books for over 15 years and if you look at the books, you can tell that they were well loved.

Old Elm Speaks by Kristine O’Connell George

Here are just a few of my class favorites.  We have lingered on Street Tree for a long time. Personification!   Metaphoric language!  Yes!

We also love Leaving Woods’ Lake, Colorado.  We talk about what this poem really means.  When students realize it means taking the memories with them after their vacation is over, they quickly make connections with their own lives.

Zoo’s Who by Douglas Florian

This book appears to be out of print, but there are few left on Amazon from 3rd party sellers.  Equally delicious is Douglas Florian’s book Poetrees.

As evident by the cover, this book was also LOVED by my kindergartners. The rhythm and rhyme of these poems make this a fun book to read and listen to.

Shared Reading

As you may know, I use one poem per week as part of my shared reading time.  You can read more about my 5 Day Fluency Plan by reading THIS post.  You can also pick up a FREE sample in that post.

Each unit has the resources to make an interactive pocket chart.

They also include a full page poem.  These work well on an interactive whiteboard or as a resource to put into your class poetry book.  I am happy to report that I have completed the 2nd Edition of my Poetry Stations and Shared Reading unit.  This a poem from the May unit.

Common Questions

Q:  What is the difference between the two different bundles?

A:  First of all, they are different poems.   I was asked to make an additional set so BOTH kindergarten and first grade could use my poetry units.   Set one was made with kindergarten in mind, so the word work is right in their lane.  Set two was made with kindergarten AND first grade in mind.  So I doubled the word work activities.  In this way, you can differentiate your classroom activities if you wish!

Q:  How do I access the music and video files?

A:  After you have made your purchase, you will download the file.  This will include a video jukebox which is linked to the files on Vimeo.  You can stream the videos.  You can also download the videos if you wish.  A link is provided for you.

I have been asked what is specifically included in these files.  This will give you a GREAT preview!

How do you explain what poetry is and how it differs from other types of text to kinders? Thanks!!

    Dear Deedee,

I just purchased Bundle 1 Poetry and I am trying to access the recorded musical tracks to accompany the poems. I am not at all a singer and often struggle with modeling how a poem should be sang. Can you let me know what I might be doing wrong.

I purchased about a week ago on TPT and when I click on the icon it comes up to a page that is not
    found.

Thank you for sharing your skills of curriculum development. I can’t count how many products I have purchased from you and have LOVED every one of them!

How do you organize all your composition notebooks so students can easily access them when it is time for instruction?

    • Deedee August 5 at 7:10 am

Katy! You are reading my MIND! I have a blog post that I’m preparing for THIS week on this subject. If you need the labels before then, email me and I can send them your way.
