We have always loved learning about oviparous and viviparous animals! Here are some oviparous animals lesson plans for your kindergarten class. You will find the free oviparous animal file towards the end of this blog post.
Oviparous Animals: Books to Love
Here are a few of the books we used when studying animals that lay eggs.
Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones by Ruth Heller
is one of my favorites! We love this book so much, we decided to include it in our Engaging Readers .
Oviparous Animals: Schema
When we learn about animals that lay eggs, we start by examining our schema about oviparous animals. This interactive writing activity not only helps us see what we already know about oviparous animals, but we also get to work a little on stretching out sounds.
As the students assist in completing this schema about animals that lay eggs, I am able to support students right where they are academically.
This is a perfect opportunity to reinforce what they already know about how words and phonics work.
Here is our completed schema chart on animals that lay eggs.
Once students have completed the oviparous animal chart together, they then do some writing on their own. Some will use the chart for support, others will respond independently.
Here is another example! The box on top tells what this student already knew about animals that lay eggs. The bottom box shows us her new learning.
We also worked together to complete an oviparous animal concept sort where we sorted oviparous and viviparous animals.
Then the students completed their own oviparous and viviparous animal sort.
Not only did we learn about animals that lay eggs, we also worked on the author’s purpose for this book!
And a little oviparous animal-themed opinion writing!
Oviparous Animals: Informational Writing
After a week of learning about oviparous animals, students work on writing what they learned.
Oviparous Animals: Craft
A week would not be complete without creating a little oviparous animal craft.

Oviparous Animal: Digital Version
In 2021, we created a digital reading response version of Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones. It has been preloaded to Seesaw and a Google Slides version of the file has also been added.
Oviparous Animal: Poem
One of our favorite poems of the year is the Oviparous poem! We sing it over and over!
You can find this poem by clicking:
Oviparous Animals: Sentence Writing
We used these oviparous animals themed Read, Trace, Glue, and Draw pages for our morning work. This is a great chance to work on handwriting skills and the students love them! Because students are not asked to compose the sentence, they can put their writing energy into forming the letters correctly.

Oviparous Animals: Class Book
We also enjoy creating a class book each year. You can grab this free response page at the end of this blog post.
Have a fantastic week.
