All about me Back to School activities for kindergarten and first grade that are perfect for back to school! Engaging back to school activities for kindergarten during the first weeks of school to share about themselves and learn about new friends!
All About Me Activities
It’s about that time to start gearing up for the beginning of the school year and putting together some fun activities to make students feel welcome during their first week. I wanted to share with you some great back-to-school activities that I have used with my kindergarten students. The kids love them and they’re super easy to prep!
Why Learn All About Me?
The first week of school can be intimidating. Students may have the first day jitters. Using activities that make children feel welcome and at home are the key to a successful first day. A great way to help students feel welcome is to have them draw and write about themselves. You can have great discussions about family, pets, and friends. Students may also draw and write about their favorite toys, favorite games, and their favorite food. Then, students can either share with the whole class or in a small group. Your students will enjoy learning about one another, making comparisons, and seeing what they have in common with their classmates.
This unit is complete with an All About Me Crown. Students draw a picture of themselves, their family, and their friends on the points of the crown. They can wear the crown all day, or even all week. The kids can easily see what they might have in common and they are a great talking point when making new friends.
Ways for New Classmates to Learn All About Me
Surveys are a fun way for young children to learn about one another! This unit comes with four different surveys students can complete to learn about their friends. Kids can ask each other about their favorite fruit, favorite sport, favorite pet, and their hair color. One way to complete the surveys is to have each child walk around the room with their survey sheet and a crayon or pencil. When a child comes up to them, they either color a rectangle or write their name in a rectangle so students can compare the different categories. This helps kindergarten teachers transition nicely into a great discussion about more than, less than, and equal to during math time!
You can also complete the survey using a pocket chart and pictures for your new students to color to show their favorite item.
More Back to School Activities for Kindergarten
Little learners love telling about their families! Creating family trees is the perfect way to this. They can be displayed in the classroom or hallway and then taken home to share with their families. If you choose, you can reach out to each child’s family so you are aware of everyone they live with and can help your kiddos complete their tree. The kids love this fun activity for sharing their families with the class.
There are a few great name activity ideas too. Students can make a name bracelet using alphabet beads during the first week of kindergarten. They can read their name, stamp it and even create it with dough! I found some dough stamps that are great to practice their names. You can check them out on Amazon here. You can also use clips to create the students’ names and practice letters. Not to mention, it’s great fine motor practice.
Getting to Know our school
One of my favorite things was going on a school tour during the first week and completing this booklet about our school. Students get to see the office, the gym, the cafeteria, the music room, and every other room in the school that will be important to them. Then, they draw and color a picture so they can show their families what the inside of the school looks!
Star of the Day
At the beginning of the year, I select a student of the day to be the line leader, door holder, special helper, etc. We call this child the Star Student! The kids love having this role. Whoever the star of the day is gets interviewed by the class. Each child draws a picture of the star of the day and writes about what that person likes. At the end of the day, I compile a book for the star student to take home as a Back to School for kindergarten keepsake.
This All About Me unit is packed with fun, engaging activities for your students at the beginning of kindergarten! It’s great for preschool and first grade too and will make students excited to come back every day this upcoming year! The All About Me activities are perfect for getting to know one another and a great start for creating awesome memories.
