I know you are busy, so I have rounded up my favorite kindergarten Christmas and winter holiday activities for you in one place.
Some of these ideas will work perfectly in a classroom that does not celebrate holidays with themes like the gingerbread man, reindeers, and evergreen trees!
I sure hope this helps you plan your December classroom lessons!
Kindergarten Christmas Activities: Read Alouds
I may have about a million different read-aloud Christmas book ideas, but I’m going to narrow it down a bit.
#1 Christmas Read Aloud: Catch That Cookie
Catch That Cookie by Hallie Durand is the story of Marshall who does not believe in the magic of gingerbread men. Then the cookies take off. It is fun gingerbread man variation story that primary grade students love. My kindergarten kiddos squealed with delight as we read the clues that eventually lead the class back to the gingerbread men.

#2 Christmas Read Aloud: Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed
Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson is a wonderful book about acts of kindness and paying it forward. Although the acts of kindness fit perfectly into the Christmas season, Christmas is not a theme in this book.
#3 Christmas Read Aloud: Peter’s Chair
Similarly, Peter’s Chair is a great story about giving.

#4 Christmas Read Aloud: Night Tree
Night Tree by Eve Bunting has always been in my Christmas rotation. I love the story of tradition and giving. We also love to make decorations that can be placed outside for the birds and animals.

#5 Christmas Read Aloud: The Polar Express
Even before the movie came out, this book had my heart! The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg .

Whole Group Christmas Activities
Here are a few activity ideas you can do with your whole classroom
#6 Christmas Poems
I love using poetry for shared reading. Each week, we select a poem to practice for fluency.
Then I teamed up with Jenny at Edutunes and she recorded a video for each poem. In this way, students can revisit the poem again and again.
We have added these recordings to Heidi Songs Streaming Service.

#7 Christmas Pocket Chart Activity
Students love this activity! You will put the color cards in a pocket chart, then hide the special images behind a few of the skills cards. As students turn the card over, they read the card, the look to see if they got the special card. This NEVER gets old. It is a great way to review skills. There is a recording sheet as well so all students remain engaged.
Now, many of you may already have center task cards that cover a skill, you can repurpose these cards in a similar fashion. Find a fun seasonal sticker or image and hide it behind the card. Your students will squeal with delight when they find it.
#8 Christmas Riddle of the Day
Another favorite in my kindergarten class is the riddle of the day. Students are first given the riddle, then based on the clues in the riddle, they work to solve the riddle.
You can find this activity:
Do you want to see my riddle of the day in the classroom?
You can also find riddles for your students to use by doing a good old Google search.
#9 Christmas and Holidays Around the World
Learning about other holiday customs is always fun. With this activity, students watch a video that we created that provides facts about the holiday, then they respond in either Seesaw or Google Classroom.
If you prefer, you can do this activity as a whole group shared writing lesson with students working on your interactive whiteboard.

#10 Kindergarten Christmas Activities – Centers
Center time is always fun, and these activities are perfect for kindergarten.
This writing center has been updated since this photo was taken. Now it is massive!!!
Sometimes it is hard to print with color ink, so I created these centers to help save your ink!
#11 Kindergarten Christmas Activities GAMES!
I love including games in center time. It drives up engagement like nothing else!
#12 Kindergarten Christmas Activities No Prep Printables
Because December is such a crazy part of the year, teachers need EASY! Here are few simple but purposeful worksheets.
These are editable, roll and write games students can use.
I hope you found a few resources you can use to make your Kindergarten activities a bit more engaging and meaningful at Christmas time!
