Student Engagement & Technology

For learning to take place, students need to be engaged. We hear this ALL. THE. TIME! I once met a principal during my student teaching who was asked a question about her school discipline plan. She responded with, “Nothing takes care of discipline like engaged students.” And boy was she right! The more actively engaged students are the most likely they are to learn and stay on task.

Technology is a great way to add engagement to your classroom. We know it’s important to incorporate technology, but sometimes we can be a little unsure of a few things. Do you often wonder if learning is really happening while your students are at your classroom computers? Or perhaps, you are looking for some way to hold students accountable during computer centers.

I might have just the thing for you!

We are excited to offer this resource for students to learn through playing games. “When students engage in learning through play, the amount of time they are exposed to and involved with learning is doubled.” (Dr. Richard Allen)

CVC words are also part of the January set of computer activities.

Earlier I mentioned that some of us may be concerned with student accountability when it comes to using technology in the classroom. For each math and literacy game,  there is an exit ticket!

This printable activity can be used in various ways. Maybe you want to complete the computer game as a whole class on your interactive whiteboard and then have students complete the response activity at their tables. Or perhaps, you want students to work on the exit ticket during their computer activity.

This computer game focuses on Making 10!  This is a great way to practice number sense.

I do want to mention that these games don’t work well on Chromebooks or tablets. They use a modified version of PowerPoint and are meant for computers.  So, if you are looking for an interactive and engaging activity for your computer center, this is it!

One more thing… we are adding new centers every month. That’s right! Monthly-themed computer games! Soon, you will have a computer game for each month of the year!  The skills will match kindergarten skills for that time of the year.

  1. Is there a way you can modify this resource so it will work on iPads? I would buy every month but we have iPads for kids and teachers have Macs without PowerPoint.

    1. We would in a heartbeat, but it is really a PowerPoint issue. The animations would not work on the scaled-down version of PowerPoint that iPads and Chromebooks have.
