Kindergarten Writing Sample:  Start with modeling!

The last week or two, I have really focused on my modeled writing.   Boy!  Did I have a story to tell!

First of all… this is a TRUE STORY!  In Missouri, we burn our fall leaves.  Suffice to say, my yard Adonis (my husband) did not ensure the embers were out before he stepped in the house for dinner.

We looked at Donald Crew’s book, Shortcuts, to see how bold words affect the way that the reader actually READS the word.  I decided I wanted to borrow this author’s craft in my own modeled writing, so I made the word “FLAMES!” all in capital letters.

We also looked at Shortcuts to see the expressions on the faces of the characters.  If he had the “stink eye” in one of the pages, I might have used it.  AND YES, I did have a black could around me!

We shared the pen on this page.  You can see a little correction tape between the “fir” and “was.” I was dropping the hammer on spaces between words in this writing mini-lesson.

Page 3:  I went across the monkey bars.

Page 4:  I went down the pole  [As this child was reading his writing back to me, he noticed he had forgotten to include the word “down.”  I showed him how to add a caret vs erasing.  This was not the focus of our writing conference, so I briefly mentioned it to him.  He quickly latched on to this writing trick!
