Here are some kindergarten penguin lesson plans! We have always loved learning about these funny little creatures!
Tacky the Penguin
We are able to pair informational text with narrative text perfectly with this favorite book!
We sure love this book!
Tacky the Penguin: Making Predictions
During the reading of the book, we paused to make a few predictions.
Sometimes our writing is just creating illustrations. We just want to make their thinking visible!
Then students used the co-created chart to retell the story on their own. This really gets EVERYONE involved.
Students worked on making connections with the text.
This one says, “I am unique because I love shoes.” (So do I. So do I.) NOTE: This student underlined “I” because she wanted to show that she capitalized it. I did not write on her paper.
This one says, “I liked the part when he gave him a good slap on the back because it was funny.”

Tacky the Penguin Video
Close reading is done over the course of several days, so it is nice to have another model of fluency to share with your class. This is a great book channel.
Students also had to work to construct and try out their penguin slides. You can find the STEM unit HERE.
Tacky Math and Literacy Centers
We also have a few math and literacy centers to go along with this great book! You can find these activities HERE.
