Read Aloud Science, Math, and More! Here are some STEM and literacy activities to extend some of your favorite kindergarten and first grade read aloud books.
Last year Deanna Jump and I set out to make our read aloud extension units. We completed August through November and then decided to stop. Several weeks ago, we heard from teachers that they REALLY wanted these units and we were asked to continue them. After some brainstorming, we came up with a plan!
Guiding Readers Science, Math, and More!
We are going back into the units to update them and add so much more to them.
Each book in the unit will have:
- a whole group activity
- centers and stations (2 math and 2 literacy). One with kindergarten skills and one with first-grade skills. Remember, in your classroom, you will have students who are exceeding grade level expectations and students who are more fragile learners. This will offer and easy way to differentiate!
- worksheet activities (2 math and 2 literacy). Just like the centers, these are differentiated.
- directed drawing writing activity. These would make a great center activity.
Many of the whole group activities are geared towards STEM.
The Centers
We included characters and themes from each book to make the centers. These are for the book I Was So Mad by Mercer Mayer. This activity is from the SECOND set Science, Math, & More YEAR LONG BUNDLE SET TWO.
This activity if for the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. It is included in the FIRST set Science, Math, & More YEAR LONG BUNDLE.
Because we use the same phonics in our Guiding Readers 1 and Guiding Readers 2 units, we have kept the activities the same for set 1 and set 2. The only things that are different are the books and themes.
Worksheets
We do have some fun worksheets in the units too!
Directed Drawings
Here is an example of the directed drawings. This one is for Alexander and the Terrible Very Bad Day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these available in a bundle?
Yes, we have created a growing bundle which will be discounted until July 8th:
If you use Guiding Readers Set One… you will want the Science, Math, & More Set One.
If you use Guiding Readers Set Two… you will want the Science, Math, & More Set Two.
I already bought the science units individually, will I still get the updates?
Yes, All you need to do is go to “My Purchases” on TpT and redownload the files. NOTE: ONLY Aug/September have been updated. October will be added in August. November will be added in September.
I would like to buy the bundle, but I don’t want to duplicate a purchase I have already made?
We have contacted TpT and found out that you can still take advantage of the bundle. Simply, make the purchase of the bundle, then put in a help ticket to TpT (through the “contact us” tab on their site.) They will refund the duplicate purchase as long as the purchase was made within the last 12 months.
What is the difference between set 1 and set 2?
The only differences are the books used, the themes used, and the whole group activities. Other than that, the centers, worksheets, and directed drawings follow the same format.
Where can I find out more information about your Guiding Readers Read Aloud units?

I sure hope that answers your questions. If you have others, simply leave a comment and I will answer them as soon as I can!

Will the science and math units correlate with the math units that you already have? I purchased Units 3 and 4 last year and loved them. I had planned to purchase the rest this year.
Hi Freida! These units are not related to our Math Curriculum. They are part of our Reading Comprehension units and offer math centers that are thematically linked to the books. I hope that helps.
Hello,
I love your resources and have several of them on my TPT “wish list”. Do you know if TPT will be having a sale before the beginning of school? I would love to purchase several items; however, I have done this in the past and then everything went on sale a couple of weeks later! (sad face!).
Thanks for creating so many wonderful teacher resources!
Summer smiles,
Sharon
Hi Sharon,
TpT has historically hosted a sale in August, but they do not let us know about the date until about 24 hours before. I’m sorry, I don’t have specific information. Gosh! I just had a sale too during the whole last week of June! SHOOT!
I have your Guiding Readers bundle and I love it! Just wondering if you read or reread the entire book each day, or do you only read it the first day and refer back to it the following days? Some of the books are lengthy for Kdg to hear 5 days in a row- like Chrysanthemum, for example. Thanks in advance for the advice!
Hi Amy! I think this link will help you! Let me know if you have other questions! I am happy to help.
