Students setting their own writing goals is an important part of writers workshop. A few weeks ago, I talked about having my students selecting their own writing goals.  I quickly made this chart.

Well… I made one that you all can use.  I put random names down since I did this at home tonight.  Tomorrow I will have my kiddos revisit their goals and perhaps select new ones.

You can grab this free file by scrolling to the bottom of this post.

Here is an example or a unit/genre specific goal chart.  This was from early in the year.  Each of these unit specific goal charts is included in our writing units.  You can see those units HERE.

Here is what one of my sweeties showed me today.   She completed this over a few days of writing time and I did not confer with her on this piece.  I would say this is a “raw” piece… it did not go through the revision process.  We talked about “How-To” texts awhile back, but I do not limit the genre in which students write, nor do I tell them what to write about.  So writing a “How-to” is just fine with me!

AND NOW I want a hamburger!

UPDATE:   We have created detailed goal charts that align with unit specific rubrics (both for Kindergarten and First Grade).

You can find them in each of our new updated Writer’s Workshop units.

Have a great evening!

Deedee, I love the Writing Goals sheet. That is PERFECT for the kids. Sometimes they just need to see it- and it helps them focus on what they really need to work on. Your little hamburger writer is a good little writer! (and illustrator- her people are better than mine are!) THANK YOU!

Printed this and used it today. I was amazed — and happy — that the kids all identified the same goal that would have chosen for them. Love this!

Hi DeeDee…When I click on the pic that is supposed to take me to the writing goals, it just sends me to your TPT store, and I can’t seem to find them in there. Please help! I’d love to use these this year!
