Alphabet Songs for kindergarten
Even though most people think of kindergarten songs as an entertaining brain break, they are so much more than that.
Singing helps kids learn vocabulary, listening skills, letter sounds, letter recognition, and so much more. When you add in some dance and hand movements, a motor skills connection is formed. When this connection happens, the information in these catchy tunes stays locked in the memory of your little learners, simply by dancing and singing together!
Another appeal of songs as learning tools is that they appeal to the various learning styles of your kindergarten students. Songs have the magical ability to reach every learner. Research also tells us that they are amazingly effective tools for cultural education and language learning, too.
The data from learning from songs also shows that they help kids develop a love of learning at an early age. Songs are also highly effective in helping with vocabulary retention in young learners. Singing educational songs with your class is one of the best things you can do to motivate your reluctant learners, too. After all, who can resist a catchy beat!? Not me!
A word of caution. You will want to pay attention to the mouth position and sound that is sung. The consonant stop sounds (b,p, k, g, t,d) can often be problematic as well as affricates (ch, j). For example, instead of saying, /b/,the video may show the sound pronounced as “buh” which can be confusing for students. Additionally, you may also see some confusion around r controlled vowels (at, or, er-ir-ur.)
The Secret Stories® Better Alphabet™ Lite Version | Jack Hartmann & Katie Garner Alphabet Song
This is my hands-down favorite video. I will tell you why. Look at the mouth positions of those phonics sounds that can be confused. They are spot on in this video. Naturally!
The Better Alphabet song is a great one to have your students practice while you are paying close attention to the mouth positions. Often times you will find that students (and adults) need to unlearn some previous mispronunciations. This is the alphabet song that will help. Add it to your playlist and hit REPEAT!
The version above is the lite is great but if you want the full juice of the brain research that you get with Secret Stories. This is the version that yields the best results.
Does that mean you can’t use other alphabet songs in kindergarten? I don’t think so, but we do want to be aware of correct mouth positions for these sounds so we can model it correctly for our students.
