15 Fall Read Alouds for Kindergarten

Fall is in full swing! Here in Colorado, we just experienced a 50-degree temperature drop with some snow. So let’s just say I am feeling the coziness of a hot cup of tea and my sweatpants! I thought it would be a great time to share some of my favorite fall read alouds to share with kindergarten students this time of year.

Scarecrow Lesson Plans for the book by Cynthia Rylant are here! These kindergarten lesson plans include math, reading, writing, crafts, and more! Come by to s see what I have gathered for your students. Fun and engaging with meaningful activities.

For this post, I’m sharing links to readaloud videos on YouTube. However, I highly recommend checking out a hard copy from the library if you can. This will make it easier for you to point things out on the page to your students, stop to review vocabulary, and ask questions as you read.

1. Bad Apple by Edward Hemingway

Enjoy this sweet story of friendship between an apple and a worm. Mac and Will love spending time together, but no one in the orchard will play with them. Then, Will goes missing and things just aren’t the same for Mac.

2. Apple Trouble by Ragnhild Scamell

A little hedgehog is getting her nest ready for the winter when an apple drops from a tree and gets stuck in her spines. She asks for help from her friends, but things keep getting worse. Your students will love following along with this read aloud to see what happens next!

3. Johnny Appleseed by Patricia Demuth

An apple unit is a staple for kindergarten classrooms in the fall. You can’t learn about apples without reading a story about Johnny Appleseed! This book by Patricia Demuth shares the story of Johnny Appleseed in a kid-friendly way.

4. Hello Fall by Deborah Diesen

In this engaging fall story, a girl and her grandpa enjoy seeing the signs of fall on a walk together. It introduces students to many different fall vocabulary words as the girl and her grandpa go on an autumn adventure.

5. Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak

This is another great book to start a discussion on the signs of fall and to learn about the changes that come with the new season. Students can practice making connections to this story as you read it aloud to the class. They can share the signs of fall that they’re seeing outside on the playground or in their neighborhoods.

6. Autumn Leaves by Ken Robbins

Nonfiction read alouds are also a must-have for fall! This is a great book that shows the different leaves and trees of autumn. Get ready to do some comparing and contrasting!

7. Leaf Trouble by Jonathan Emmett

In this clever story, Pip Squirrel discovers that the leaves are changing colors and falling from the trees. Do the leaves need help? Pip thinks so!

8. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves by Lucille Colandro

This book series is always a hit with kindergarten students, and this fall-themed story is no exception. The old lady swallows some very interesting objects in this story, which can create an opportunity for students to make inferences and predictions. Why is she swallowing a pole to prop up a pumpkin?

9. Sneeze, Big Bear, Sneeze by Maureen Wright

Autumn is here and Bear thinks his great big sneeze is causing all the signs of fall, such as falling leaves and geese flying south. The autumn breeze has a different explanation to share with Big Bear, but will he listen?

10. Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson

A sweet fox is concerned about his favorite tree because its leaves are turning brown. He tries his best to save the falling leaves and the tree.

11. Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant

I love this story and really every book by Cynthia Rylant! This peaceful story about a scarecrow is perfect for fall. The illustrations are beautiful! 12. It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse by Laura Numeroff

Laura Numeroff books are always a hit in kindergarten. This story gives you the chance to practice counting with your students and also to discuss different emotions. Students can guess what kind of pumpkin it is based on the facial expression Mouse paints on it. Is it a silly pumpkin or a sad pumpkin?

13. Penguin and Pumpkin by Salina Yoon

Fall is white and snowy where Penguin lives, but he wants to know what it looks like off the ice. So Penguin and his friends take a long journey to see what fall looks like in another part of the world.

14. Splat the Cat and the Pumpkin-Picking Plan by Rob Scotton

Splat and Seymour head to Farmer Patch’s pumpkin patch to find the perfect pumpkin for the front porch. He finds the perfect pumpkin but has one problem… it’s a little too big. This read aloud is a great opportunity to discuss problem and solution with your students!

15. Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell

In this fall read aloud, a boy named Tim carves a wonderful pumpkin and names him Jack. Tim watches as Jack changes day after day. This story is great for starting a discussion about the pumpkin life cycle. In fact, you can find a variety of reading comprehension companion activities for this story in my shop.
