Students are loving the interactive retelling part of these units! Moving the pieces, acting out parts of the story, and working together makes the whole experience so engaging. You can practically feel the excitement in the room! It’s such a perfect fit for any fairy tale unit, and you can easily pair it with a set of worksheets or follow-up activities to extend the learning. Plus, it gives students a fun, meaningful way for additional practice using a basic sentence pattern as they retell the events in order.

This class also did an inferring lesson, and oh my goodness… it was fantastic! I love that the students not only shared their thoughts, but they also supported them with text evidence. That’s big-kid critical thinking right there! Their confidence absolutely shines when they realize they can back up their ideas with the story structure itself.

Students also stated their opinions with a supporting reason! WIN! There’s just something magical about seeing young learners clearly express what they think and explain why. It’s such a sweet peek into their growing confidence as writers and thinkers!

Little Red Riding Hood Lesson Plans: Guided Reading

Students were even able to read the same story during guided reading with our matching set of books. Each set comes with leveled texts from AA–J, so every child can enjoy the story at just the right level. It’s such a seamless way to connect our whole-group read-aloud with small-group instruction and the kids feel so proud reading a version of the tale on their own!

Word work and phonics lessons are also included… hooray for built-in skill practice!

Young children use Elkonin boxes to segment and blend two-phoneme words, and they feel like little reading superheroes as they stretch out each sound. It’s such a simple structure, but it builds foundational skills in the sweetest, most effective and fun way!

Students also used these word tiles to build words as they manipulated phonemes. There’s something so magical about watching them slide the tiles, swap sounds, and suddenly light up when a new word appears. It’s hands-on phonics at its best!

Here are a few of the fun activities with a Little Red Riding Hood theme and they are adorable!

Kindergarten students practice counting and numeral formation, and the fairy-tale flair makes the whole fun activity feel extra magical. It’s amazing how a fun theme can turn simple practice into big excitement! These centers connect beautifully to the story of the Little Red Riding Hood and add so much joy to early learning.
