*NOTE OF WARNING:  In the book Penguin Chick, there is a mention of a Jackass Penguin on the final pages.   Don’t do what I did and blurt that out.  There is no forgetting about the type of penguin in your kindergarten class.  I may or may not have heard an audible gasp from my little friends, that was followed up with “Jackass Penguin… Jackass Penguin…” 

Before reading our story, we charted what we already knew (in black) and wrote some of the questions we had.  As we gathered new information we added our new knowledge to our chart (in orange).  This is a great chart to refer back to.  Students also used it during writers workshop.

This was one of our favorite activities to do every year.  We also tried out the blubber hand activity from Deanna Jump’s Penguins Math and Literacy Fun.
