Are you looking for some engaging math practice activities for your December, January, or even February lesson plans? These free kindergarten winter math activities will add some low-prep engagement to your daily learning routine.
3 Free Winter Math Activities for Kindergarten
Here are three fun math activities that your class can try out for free. These printables require little prep and are so open-ended that you can use them in your classroom for weeks and weeks! They will help your students practice counting skills while also practicing basic addition concepts. The themed activities are not specific to a holiday, so you can use them all winter long!
1. Build an Igloo
In this math station activity, each student is tasked with building an igloo. They are given 20 math manipulatives like snap cubes. You could also use small drinking cups if you wish. Students can use as many of the manipulatives as they’d like to create their igloos.

As with any STEM challenge, it’s fun to see how different students approach the building of their igloo! Some students make a solid, traditional structure while others make a tower. My class loved designing and building their igloos!

Once students have had a chance to build an igloo, they will create a drawing of their completed structure. Then, they will color the ten frames to show how many cubes they used to make their igloo. This is great practice for counting teen numbers, since most students will have used most of their building materials.

Overall, this is a very fun activity for kindergarten students. This can even be a repeatable activity, as kindergarteners are often eager to try building it again. To keep it fresh, you could give them different building materials when repeating the activity.
2. Domino Math
This winter-themed domino math activity is a fun way for students to practice counting and foundational addition skills.

Start by placing several dominoes face-down on the table and have students choose one from the pile. They will draw their domino in the space provided on their response sheet. After counting the dots, they will draw a picture to match the numbers on their domino.

If your students use math journals, this should be a task that feels familiar to them! They will be able to model their thinking with pictures. You can encourage them to draw winter-themed objects or you can leave it open-ended. This student chose to draw cars and Lamborghinis!!

After drawing the picture, students will write a sentence about what they drew, including how many objects they have in all. Since this activity is so open-ended, students can easily repeat this activity during math centers for weeks! They will have a different combination of numbers each time they select a different domino.
3. Ten Frame Story Problem
This ten frame dice activity gives students the chance to practice writing and solving addition word problems. The free file includes dice inserts for pocket cubes, which you can find on Amazon. If you don’t have pocket cubes on hand, you can give your students a standard die.

Each student will roll the die two times. After each roll, they will fill in a ten frame to match the number they rolled. In the third ten frame, students will add their rolls together and fill in the total.

Once they have the numbers and the total, students can draw a picture to match. Much like the domino activity, students can draw a winter-themed picture or choose any other objects they want.
After drawing a picture using the numbers on their ten frames, students will write a sentence about the picture. They should include a sentence that says how many objects they have in all. This is a fun way for them to become more familiar with addition terms.
The fun with pocket cubes doesn’t have to end with this winter math activity! Check out my post for more ways that you can use these pocket cubes for centers all year.
4 Ideas for Using These Winter Math Activities
As I mentioned earlier in the post, these open-ended activities can be used for math practice throughout the winter months. Here are four ways that you can use these activities to enhance your math practice this winter.
- Morning Work – These repeatable activities are perfect for morning work, since students will know exactly what to do if they see these printables on their desks. This is a great way to add some additional math practice to your daily routine.
- Math Centers – Students can complete these activities multiple times as part of your math center rotations. They will be able to complete these activities independently before moving to the next station.
- Flex Time – In the weeks leading up to winter break, there are often odd pockets of extra time in the schedule. These winter math activities are great to have on hand when an assembly dismisses early.
- Sub Plans – Winter is the season of sickness! These low-prep winter math activities are easy to add to your last-minute sub plans.
