Kindergarten Activities for Presidents Day
President’s Day in kindergarten can be a bit lackluster. But we combined a great Abraham Lincoln Read Aloud with our interactive read-aloud and had a blast!
We started off our unit of study with Abe Lincoln’s Hat by Martha Brenner. We focused in our close reading on a select few chapters.
Learning About Presidents
We started learning about presidents by wondering what would it take to be a great president. Together, we created this chart. Have I mentioned lately that I love kindergarten!
Problem and Solution
In the book, Abe Lincoln’s Hat, the author discusses how Abe Lincoln had a problem, he kept losing his papers. So on our first reading we worked on identifying the problem and solution, then we wrote about it.
Although this photos are a few years old, I wanted to let you know that I encouraged students to convey meaning through their drawing and their words.
Making Connections
We also worked on making connections. The writing prompt was: Abe Lincoln kept important papers in his hat. Think about something that is important to you.”
Again, we start by drawing.
Will you look closely at the Abe in the middle? The text says, “I would put Deedee Wills in my hat.” This was the year that my students all called me, “Deedee Wills” sort of all run together. It cracked me up, so I let it ride.
Kindergarten President’s Day Activities: Craft and Sentence Study
Our President’s Day activities would not be complete in kindergarten without a craft.
We always try to tie in what we are learning to our craft activity, so we included a sentence study with this craft.
