It’s always fun to learn about weather in the early elementary classroom. Our curious young students love to learn new facts about the world around them, including weather! An easy way to incorporate some weather discussion into your daily learning routine is with videos. In this post, I’m going to share some of my favorite weather videos for kids along with some engaging weather activities.
Weather Videos for Kids
My students loved exploring and learning about all different types of weather. Since I lived in the midwest for a LONG time, we experienced quite a variety of weather. Anything could happen!
The very best way for students to learn about weather is to see it in action. However, if you don’t live in an area with a lot of weather variety, videos can come in handy! Not only do videos let students see and experience different types of weather, but they can also be used for read-alouds and sing-alongs throughout a weather unit.
Here are some of my favorite weather books for kids. I’ll start with informational videos about weather, then move on to read-aloud videos. I’ll also share some of my favorite weather song videos.
1. Wonder About Weather | National Geographic Kids
This is a really short video that would be great as an introduction to a weather unit. It provides a helpful explanation about what causes weather and why it’s important.
2. What Causes Thunder & Lightning | SciShow Kids
Most students are familiar with thunder and lightning, but they might not know what causes these storms. This is a great video that shares facts about thunder and lightning that your students will find interesting.

6. Weather Words and What They Mean | Gail Gibbons
I always suggest using a physical copy of a book for a read-aloud, especially for nonfiction topics. However, I know how hard it can be to locate a book at the last minute! That’s why I wanted to share some engaging weather read-aloud videos that you can use during a weather unit.
