It is so easy to forget that there are some of your kinder-babies who do not know how to write their name. I hate to do drill and kill worksheets, but sometimes a paper trace can be helpful… IF you make it engaging! There HAS to be a purpose. So the wheels started to turn…
What about a survey? But … it had to be a pictorial survey since many of my love-bugs are not yet able to read.
Here is what I came up with!
Here is what their response page looks like. I made it editable… Please don’t ask me how… I have NO idea… but the PDF can be edited so you can type your cutie’s names in.
This is the set up! First I printed the graph (there are two options), The survey question, and the option pictures. I laminated them all. I put the option pictures on the colored bins under my calendar.
As the students filled out their paper, they folded it and placed them in the corresponding bin.
One by one I took them out. I started with the blue bin. I pulled the picture off (that was put on with Scotch tape) and transferred it to the graph. Then I unfolded the response pages one by one and marked on the graph. When we were done, our graph looked like this.
Here is one of the responses I got.
She did not write her name again on the two bottom lines, but this was just our first time! |
My WORD! This was so simple! My kiddos worked on it for a few minutes when they walked in the door. Then they went on to their regular morning work. They were motivated to get their names done and their opinion heard.
I was thinking… what a great spring board for persuasive writing! We could add an extension activity to this!
In any event, this unit has 20 pictorial questions and all the forms you will need. I also included 9 question cards to help you as you talk about the data.
It will be posted on my TpT store for a discounted price until this Saturday!
$4.00 until Saturday!!! Click on the picture above to find it! |

This looks wonderful Deedee! The awesome book Kid Writing talks about surveys. I often have several Firsties that come to me not being able to write their name. =(
Thank you so much for always sharing and creating activities that help AND engage our sweet little ones. =)

DeeDee…I love when yu say don't ask me how I did this. I find my self doing the same thing. I fiddle and fiddle to get something to work the way I want it to and when suddenly it works I have no idea what I did…I'm just grateful it finally works.
I love killing two birds with one stone. Graphing, more and less, and writing your name all in one. I LOVE it!

Thank you for this awesome idea. I do have a question — is there a font you use with kindergarten lines and zaner bloser print?
Yes, I bought it a while back. You can purchase line font from Letter Delights. 🙂
WOW, what a great idea! I spent so much time making surveys for my kids, but I always do them on a clip board with students walking around, your was seems so much calmer and more organized! Thanks as always for the great tip.
